Yangtze River Cruises: Direction, Cabins and Embarkation
For a Three Gorges cruise, compare the ship and its actual sailing programme as carefully as the route. Chongqing and Yichang are the main gateway cities, while the physical embarkation or transfer point depends on the selected sailing.
Upstream or downstream?
| Choice | What it means for the wider trip |
|---|---|
| Downstream toward Yichang | Commonly a shorter programme; check the number of nights and the final disembarkation transfer. |
| Upstream toward Chongqing | Often an additional night; compare the actual daily programme rather than assuming every operator follows one pattern. |
| City nights before or after | A buffer in the gateway can protect an embarkation or a separate onward journey. |
Compare cabins and ships
Ask for the current deck plan, cabin size, balcony details, bedding and location relative to lifts, engines and entertainment areas. Confirm lift coverage and any steps between the cabin, dining area and boarding point. A star label alone does not establish the facilities or service style you need.
What the fare covers
Request a written list of meals, drinks, included shore visits, optional excursions, transfers, guide language and any service charges. Ask what happens if you stay on board instead of joining an outing. A dam visit, a ship-lift experience and a lock passage are different activities; include only the arrangements confirmed for your sailing.
Use the final embarkation instructions
Confirm the exact pier or coach meeting area, reporting time and luggage arrangements from the operator’s final notice. An old city map pin is not a boarding instruction. Water conditions and navigation decisions can affect the programme, so avoid a tight independent flight or train immediately after disembarkation.
