Chinese Food Guide: Regional Cuisines and What to Try
Chinese food is best explored region by region. Start with the local cooking of the places on your route, then choose a few dishes that fit your tastes. A banquet, a small noodle shop and a Cantonese tea house offer different ways to experience a meal.

Order for the table
Many sit-down meals use shared dishes with rice or noodles ordered separately. Ask about portion size before ordering one dish per person. Soup, vegetables and a less heavily seasoned dish can balance a meal. Individual noodle bowls, breakfast shops and dim sum follow their own serving patterns.
Explain dietary needs precisely
Describe ingredients you must avoid rather than relying only on a broad label. A vegetable dish may contain meat stock, lard, oyster sauce or dried seafood. Communicate allergies in written Chinese and ask about preparation and cross-contact. If a restaurant cannot confirm the ingredients or process, choose another option.
Make room for a food stop
Put a market, tea house or regional meal near a visit already on your route. Check current opening hours and reservation needs for a specific restaurant. Street names and dishes are useful starting points; an undated list cannot confirm that a business is still trading.
