Identify the passport category before reading a stay period
Hong Kong has separate entry requirements from mainland China and Macao. The Immigration Department’s official table identifies nationality and document types, including distinctions within some countries. British citizens are listed for visits up to 180 days, while ordinary Australian and Canadian visitor categories are listed for 90 days. Other categories receive shorter periods or require a visa. These are examples from the current table, not a complete chart or an automatic right to land. Read the exact line and its remarks for the passport you will actually carry.
Visitor permission has a defined purpose
The official visitor guidance requires adequate funds for the stay without working and generally onward or return tickets, with specified treatment for transit toward the mainland or Macao. Visitor status does not authorize employment, whether paid or unpaid, student enrolment, or establishing or joining a business. A tourism itinerary should not be used to begin work because a visa-free stay is long enough. Where activities include business meetings or another purpose, ask the department to clarify which visitor activities are permitted and which require a different entry route.
Indian pre-arrival registration is a separate step
The official nationality table lists a 14-day visitor category for Indian nationals with pre-arrival registration requirements and specified exceptions. Complete the relevant official process before travel where it applies, and carry the document required by that process. A mainland visa or a hotel voucher does not replace Hong Kong registration. If registration cannot be completed or the intended stay and purpose fall outside the route, consult the Immigration Department about the appropriate application. Do not assume another traveller’s successful registration establishes your own eligibility.
Transit does not always mean no visa
Distinguish remaining within an airport’s transit area from passing immigration to collect bags, change airports, take a ferry or visit the city. The official table includes document-specific transit remarks, so a general statement that every passenger can connect without a visa is unreliable. Give the operating carrier the complete ticket sequence and passport details. Separate tickets, bag collection and a landside overnight can change what the traveller must do. A short connection duration does not override a visa requirement associated with the document or route.
When a visit visa application is needed
Use the Immigration Department’s visit/transit application instructions and the channel relevant to the applicant. The visitor application material includes the ID 1003A applicant form and, where relevant, ID 1003B sponsor form; online channels and document submission requirements are described by the department. Indian visit-visa applications have specific direct-submission instructions in the official guidance. Prepare the purpose, itinerary, financial evidence and any sponsor information consistently. A sponsor’s invitation supports the application but is not itself an approval or a promise that the border will admit the visitor.

Allow time for assessment and document corrections
Follow the current processing information from the department rather than an old blog’s guaranteed turnaround. Submission, a request for further evidence, payment and collection or e-visa issuance are separate stages. Keep the application reference and use it when enquiring through the official channel. If the travel date changes during assessment, ask whether the itinerary or other material should be updated. Do not book a fixed departure on the assumption that a successful upload means the application is granted. Check the current fee and accepted payment channel before making payment.
Link Hong Kong with mainland travel carefully
A Beijing–Hong Kong–Beijing itinerary includes a new mainland entry on the return. The Hong Kong visit permission does not restore a used mainland visa entry. If the return relies on a unilateral exemption or a qualifying transit route, check that entire entry independently. A Hong Kong high-speed rail journey toward Guangzhou or Shenzhen also involves boundary procedures; a confirmed seat does not itself establish permission to enter the mainland. Store the final rail order and the required identity evidence together, then check the actual departure station and border arrangement.
Arrival record and extension questions
Read the limit of stay and retain the arrival information provided by the immigration authority. A visa-free visitor still has a final permitted day. If transport is disrupted or a longer stay is needed, consult the department before the permission expires and follow the relevant extension procedure. The official guidance cautions that visitors ordinarily cannot change immigration status after arrival except in unusual circumstances. A longer hotel booking therefore should not be treated as an extension or a new work permission. Ask about the immigration issue separately from changing a ticket.
Use a route example to test every leg
For a first combined trip, write three rows: arrival in Hong Kong, onward entry to mainland China, and departure from the mainland. Each row should show the original travel document, entry basis, destination address and next confirmed journey where required. A London–Hong Kong–Shanghai–Tokyo route can involve Hong Kong visitor treatment and a separately assessed mainland transit or other permission. Reversing the order can change the applicable checks. Review the actual flights and connections rather than assuming that two routes with the same city names have identical eligibility.

Frequently asked questions
Does a mainland visa also cover Hong Kong?
No. Hong Kong has its own entry requirements. Check the official nationality and document table, including its remarks. A return to the mainland requires another mainland entry assessment.
Can I work during a visa-free visit?
Visitor conditions do not authorize employment, paid or unpaid, student enrolment, or establishing or joining a business. Ask the Immigration Department about the appropriate permission for the intended activity.
Do Indian visitors need pre-arrival registration?
The official table lists a 14-day visitor category with pre-arrival registration requirements and exceptions. Follow the official process applicable to the individual case before travel, rather than relying on another passenger’s registration.
Is an airport connection always visa-free?
No universal statement applies to every travel document and connection. Read the table’s transit remarks, and check whether the trip remains airside or involves bag collection, a landside hotel or another boundary crossing.
How do I apply when a visit visa is required?
Use the Immigration Department’s current visit/transit application instructions and relevant submission channel. ID 1003A and, where applicable, ID 1003B are named forms in the official process. Submission or a sponsor invitation does not itself mean approval.
