Landscape, culture and pace
Why visit Lijiang?
Lijiang sits on a high plain at about 2,400 metres, below the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain range. That geography gives you a compact historic base, short transfers to Naxi villages and a full-day mountain excursion without changing hotels every night.
The UNESCO-listed Old Town of Lijiang is not just the busy centre of Dayan. The World Heritage property also includes Shuhe, about 4 kilometres northwest of Dayan, and Baisha, about 8 kilometres north. Seeing at least two of these areas makes the history easier to understand: Dayan developed as a trading centre, while the northern settlements retain a closer relationship with farmland, water sources and the lower mountain slopes.
Lijiang also works as the hinge in a route through northwest Yunnan. Trains from Dali usually take about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, while trains north to Shangri-La generally take 1 to 2 hours; exact services must be checked for your date. This lets a Kunming to Dali to Lijiang to Shangri-La itinerary move in one direction with no return to Kunming between stops.
The city suits first-time China visitors who want culture and mountain scenery in the same stay, but it is not equally easy for everyone. Dayan has polished stone lanes, steps and vehicle-free sections, and the Glacier Park cableway reaches a platform at 4,506 metres. Families and older travellers can still visit Lijiang comfortably by staying near a vehicle-accessible gate and choosing a lower-altitude mountain plan; the exact arrangement will be confirmed in the proposal.
Seven useful choices
Best things to do in Lijiang
Walk Dayan Old Town early
Enter before about 9:00 for quieter lanes, then follow the canals toward the market and residential edges rather than staying only around the central square. This works for history-focused visitors, photographers and anyone prepared for uneven stone underfoot.
Compare Shuhe and Baisha
Shuhe is about 4 kilometres from Dayan and Baisha about 8 kilometres, so both can fit into one well-routed half or full day. Choose this for Naxi settlement history and a slower walking day; current access to mural halls and cultural sites should be confirmed before departure.
Plan Jade Dragon Snow Mountain by altitude
The Glacier Park cableway reaches 4,506 metres, far higher than Lijiang Old Town, and wind or weather can change operations. Active adults may choose the high platform, while families, older travellers or altitude-sensitive guests should discuss lower options such as the 3,240-metre Spruce Meadow area.
Use Black Dragon Pool for geographic context
The pool and its water system are part of the UNESCO property, and the Jade Dragon range lies directly north of the city. A 1- to 2-hour visit pairs well with a nearby cultural museum and suits travellers who want a lighter first day at 2,400 metres.
Learn how Naxi culture is represented
Use a guided heritage session, museum visit or current traditional-music programme to distinguish Dongba traditions from generic old-town retail. This is most useful for first-time visitors; the venue, interpreter and programme will be confirmed in the proposal.
Hike Tiger Leaping Gorge over 2 days
The upper trail involves sustained climbs, exposed sections and an overnight stay, so it fits regular hikers rather than travellers seeking an easy scenic walk. Non-hikers can use a road-based viewpoint plan, but weather and trail access must be checked close to travel.
Eat beyond the main visitor lanes
Use a market visit or a locally guided meal to compare Naxi staples with broader Yunnan ingredients instead of treating the Old Town as one dining district. Wild mushrooms should only be eaten in season at a reputable kitchen because correct identification and thorough cooking matter.
Choose the right depth
How many days do you need in Lijiang?
2 days: essential stop
Use the first day for Dayan Old Town, Black Dragon Pool and a cultural introduction. On day 2, choose either Baisha and Shuhe or Jade Dragon Snow Mountain; trying to include both usually turns the day into transfers and queues. This pace fits travellers continuing between Dali and Shangri-La, but it leaves little weather flexibility.
4 days: balanced first visit
Allow one old-town day, one Baisha and Shuhe day, one mountain day and one flexible day for a slower start, a cultural activity or changed weather. Four days is the practical choice for most first-time visitors, families and older travellers because the 4,506-metre Glacier Park option does not need to follow immediately after arrival.
7 days: Lijiang plus the gorge
Spend 4 days around Lijiang, then use 2 days for the Tiger Leaping Gorge high trail and 1 day for transfer or weather buffer. Hikers can continue north toward Shangri-La after the gorge; non-hikers can replace the trek with a road-based gorge visit and additional village time.
Weather, crowds and cost pressure
Best time to visit
March to May and October to November usually give the best balance for walking and mountain visibility. Lijiang has a marked wet season from roughly May to October, while the wider Yunnan pattern puts about 85 percent of annual rain in those six months; a forecast for your exact dates still matters more than a monthly average.
| Months | Typical conditions | Crowds | Price level | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January to February | Dry days; cold mornings and nights, sometimes near freezing | Low to medium; a sharp rise around Lunar New Year | Usually lower outside the holiday | Pack layers; high mountain areas are much colder than town |
| March to April | Mostly dry, with average daytime highs rising from the high teens toward about 20 degrees Celsius | Medium | Medium | Strong highland sun and large day-to-night temperature changes |
| May to June | Mild days; rainfall increases as the wet season develops | High around the early-May holiday, then medium | High during the holiday, otherwise medium | Carry rain protection and leave flexibility for mountain cloud |
| July to August | The wettest period, with frequent rain and more cloud over mountain routes | High during school holidays | High | Trail conditions, landslide risk and cableway changes need current checks |
| September to October | Rain eases through the period; cooler, clearer days become more common | High around the first week of October | High during the national holiday, then medium | Avoid tight connections during the holiday week |
| November to December | Dry, clear conditions with cold nights | Low to medium | Usually lower | Shorter daylight and frost are possible; bring warm layers |
Climate descriptions are planning ranges, not forecasts. Public holidays change each year, and exact operating conditions will be checked in the dated proposal.
Choose an area before a property
Where to stay
Old Town edge
Best for a first visit, late arrivals and travellers with luggage. You can walk into Dayan while keeping road access within a short distance; ask for the actual distance from the vehicle drop-off, not just an Old Town address.
Inside Dayan Old Town
Best for travellers who value early and late walks more than vehicle access. Expect stone lanes, possible steps and luggage handling; confirm the walking distance and noise exposure before booking.
Shuhe area
Best for a quieter base with restaurants and services still nearby. It sits about 4 kilometres northwest of Dayan, so visits to central Lijiang require a ride, but Baisha and the mountain road are easier to combine.
Baisha and the northern village belt
Best for repeat visitors, slower stays and early access toward Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Dining and evening transport are more limited than around Dayan; a lakeside or resort-style property farther out only makes sense when daily vehicle arrangements are included.
No named hotel is recommended here because room condition, foreign-guest registration, heating, access and construction noise can change. The exact property and inclusions will be confirmed in the proposal.
Air, rail and local transfers
Getting there and around
From Kunming
Direct trains generally take about 3.5 to 5 hours. Use the official railway schedule for your date, and allow additional time to reach Lijiang Old Town from the station.
From Dali
Direct trains usually take about 1.5 to 2.5 hours for the roughly 157-kilometre rail journey. This is the most efficient link in a Kunming, Dali and Lijiang route.
By air
Lijiang Sanyi International Airport is about 29 kilometres from Dayan Old Town, and a road transfer commonly takes around 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic and the final drop-off point.
Onward to Shangri-La
Direct trains cover the 139-kilometre route in about 1 to 2 hours. A road itinerary takes longer but can include Tiger Leaping Gorge without returning to Lijiang.
Inside Dayan, walking is the practical way to move because many lanes do not take normal vehicles. Use a taxi, arranged car or suitable local service for Shuhe, Baisha and the snow-mountain area; a car cannot remove the walking, stairs or altitude at the final site.
For a mountain day, leave the hotel early enough for the confirmed cableway time and build in the park shuttle transfer. Tickets, passport registration, cableway operation and weather rules can change, so the exact arrangement will be confirmed in the proposal rather than promised on this page.

Lijiang FAQ
What is the best time to visit Lijiang?
March to May and October to November usually offer a useful balance of walking weather and clearer mountain days. July and August are wetter, while winter is drier but nights can be close to freezing.
How many days do you need in Lijiang?
Plan 4 days for Dayan, Baisha, Shuhe and one mountain day without compressing every visit. Use 2 days only for a short stop, or 7 days if you are adding a 2-day Tiger Leaping Gorge hike and a transfer buffer.
Is Lijiang suitable for children or older travellers?
Yes, if the hotel is near vehicle access and the plan accounts for cobbled lanes, steps and rest time. The 4,506-metre Glacier Park platform is not the default choice for every family; a lower-altitude mountain visit can be planned after age, mobility and health needs are discussed.
Is altitude a problem in Lijiang?
Lijiang Old Town is about 2,400 metres, so some visitors notice mild headache, fatigue or shortness of breath on arrival. Keep the first day light; Jade Dragon Snow Mountain needs separate caution because its Glacier Park platform is at 4,506 metres.
How do I get to Lijiang from Kunming or Dali?
Direct trains from Kunming generally take about 3.5 to 5 hours, while Dali to Lijiang usually takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Timetables change, so the exact train and station transfer will be confirmed for your travel date.
How much does a trip to Lijiang cost?
The total depends on the month, room category, group size, private transport and whether the 2-day gorge hike or high-altitude cableway is included. A dated proposal will state the exact price and separate included hotels, guiding, transport and tickets from meals, personal spending and any optional activities.
