Build a cultural spine with contrasting stops
For a broad first visit, use Beijing and Xi’an as the cultural spine, then choose 2 or 3 contrasting stops. Chengdu adds food and pandas, Guilin adds karst landscapes, while Shanghai gives the trip an urban finish. Do not combine all of them unless transfers remain comfortable.
Give a slower region two nights
A fourteen-day route can absorb a slower region. Give a river landscape, mountain park or old-town area at least 2 nights so the group can arrive before dark and use a weather window instead of seeing it only from a vehicle.
Compare door-to-door rail and flight time
Treat domestic flights and high-speed rail as different tools. Rail is often easier city-centre to city-centre; flights can be useful when the geography is wide. Compare total door-to-door time, not just the published journey duration.
Carry the passport used for the rail booking
Use the official 12306 system for rail rules and identity requirements. A passport used at booking should travel with the passenger, because it is the document used for station verification.
Finish near the international departure
Keep the last 2 nights in a city with dependable access to the departure airport. Ending with a remote landscape hotel may be romantic, but it turns a normal schedule change into a long recovery problem.

14-day proposal: days, bases and activities
This is an editable route proposal, not an already-booked tour or a guarantee of transport inventory. Day 1 includes international arrival and the final day includes departure. The calendar table makes those periods explicit; match the named admissions and each domestic journey to actual reservations before paying.
| Day | Base | Proposed use of the day |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beijing | Arrive and settle into the first hotel |
| 2 | Beijing | Reserved Palace Museum and a flexible nearby walk |
| 3 | Beijing | Mutianyu or another separately chosen Wall section |
| 4 | Beijing | Temple of Heaven, a collection or a slower city day |
| 5 | Xi’an | Intercity transfer and an optional short walk |
| 6 | Xi’an | Terracotta Army reservation and Lintong transfers |
| 7 | Xi’an | City culture and a meal; a lighter afternoon |
| 8 | Chengdu | Transfer; confirm the station or airport and pickup |
| 9 | Chengdu | Reserved Panda Base morning; flexible afternoon |
| 10 | Chengdu | Named food or cultural activity with dietary confirmation |
| 11 | Shanghai | Transfer; no remote fixed excursion on arrival |
| 12 | Shanghai | Chosen museum branch and a city district walk |
| 13 | Shanghai | Flexible city day or a separately assessed Suzhou extension |
| 14 | Departure | International departure with its own transfer allowance |
Beijing: give the fixed tickets separate days
The Palace Museum and a Great Wall excursion have different gates, booking processes and travel distances. Reserve the palace according to its current real-name instructions and choose the exact Wall section before confirming the vehicle. The Palace Museum normally closes on Mondays except statutory holidays, so reorder the city days if needed. Temple of Heaven’s park and principal paid monuments have different hours. Do not assume that a ticket for the park opens every hall or that neighbouring central-city attractions share one admission.
Xi’an: keep Lintong apart from the city circuit
The Terracotta Army is outside central Xi’an in the Lintong area. Use the mausoleum museum’s official admission channel, match the passport details and carry the original document. Its visitor information identifies the North Gate as the entrance and separate facilities within the wider museum complex. Give the site a meaningful half-day plus the actual transfer. A city-wall or collection visit belongs on another period if the group wants a slower pace. Avoid placing a fixed evening train after a remote outing without a confirmed return allowance.
Shanghai: select the actual museum building
Shanghai Museum on People’s Square and Shanghai Museum East are different visits. The live museum site lists different hours and weekly closures for the two branches; special exhibitions can change booking requirements. Choose the building before reserving the surrounding transport. A Bund-area walk can remain flexible, while a river cruise is another ticketed product with its own quay and sailing notice. Keep the final international departure at Pudong or Hongqiao tied to the actual flight rather than a generic Shanghai airport transfer.
Chengdu: pandas and food need their own bookings
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is different from Dujiangyan Panda Valley. The official ticket page gives separate morning and afternoon entry windows and allows reservations up to 14 days ahead under the published rules. Choose the actual facility and day, then plan the hotel transfer. A panda ticket does not guarantee that a particular animal will be in a particular enclosure. On another day, book a named Sichuan food or cultural session and communicate ingredient restrictions before arrival. Keep the afternoon flexible after an early visit.

Rail and domestic flights: compare the full movement
Use 12306 for the complete station, passenger identity and live rail inventory. The English FAQ explains that an itinerary sheet is not a boarding document; carry the original valid identity document used for the ticket. A rail or flight timetable omits hotel checkout, the trip to the terminal, security, luggage handling and the arrival transfer. Record those legs as part of the movement day. A faster published train does not necessarily make two remote hotels a short door-to-door journey.
Five alternative route emphases
For a history-focused version, keep Beijing and Xi’an and spend the remaining nights on Shanghai or eastern-China culture. For food, replace an optional landscape base with Chengdu. For karst scenery, allocate real nights to Guilin or Yangshuo and assess the Li River service separately. For a garden-oriented route, deepen Shanghai with Suzhou or Hangzhou. For a family, reduce the number of hotel changes and keep shorter daily outings. These are alternatives, not five extra stops to add to the same 14 days.
Check the entry permission before the route is paid
A fourteen- or twenty-one-day mainland journey should not be assumed to fit a permission described as 240-hour transit. Transit rules also require the correct passport, designated ports, permitted geography and third-country onward sequence. An ordinary consular visa or another exemption has its own conditions. If adding Hong Kong or Macao, assess their admission and any mainland return separately. Keep the actual permitted stay and international ticket sequence visible beside the proposed day table.
Put the 2026 calendar beside the reservations
The State Council’s 2026 holiday notice sets Spring Festival at 15–23 February, Labour Day at 1–5 May and National Day at 1–7 October. Mid-Autumn is 25–27 September. Compare any domestic transfers or named admissions within those blocks with live availability. The dates from a 2025 route cannot simply be reused. If the travel dates are fixed, reduce extra transfers and keep one principal reservation each day rather than promise every famous attraction will be available.
Price a route using its actual components
List hotel nights, domestic transport, local transfers, admissions, guiding, meals and specialist activities separately. Ask whether a quotation includes a Wall cableway, a scenic-area shuttle, a river sailing or a special exhibition. Room category, breakfast and additional-bed arrangements matter to families. Compare the actual cancellation deadlines as well as the totals. A proposed sightseeing day should remain meaningful without requiring a purchase that was not disclosed in the quotation. Save the booking and provider contact for every fixed component.
Frequently asked questions
Does the plan count arrival and departure?
Yes. Day 1 and day 14 include international arrival and departure. They are not assumed to be full sightseeing days. Write every hotel night and fixed transport leg before confirming the principal attraction reservations.
Can I use rail for every transfer?
Assess each actual connection on 12306 and compare its full door-to-door movement with a flight where relevant. Use the complete station names and original passport. The day table proposes bases rather than guarantees direct services or seat inventory.
Can I replace a city with a landscape destination?
Yes, if the replacement includes enough nights and the actual transfers. Guilin or Yangshuo, a Yunnan base and Zhangjiajie have different transport and operating requirements. Remove another component when needed rather than add a new remote stop without time.
Which reservations should come first?
Check the entry basis and international route, then the essential domestic movement and principal named admissions. Palace Museum, Terracotta Army and Panda Base have their own booking rules. Place flexible walks and meals around those commitments.
How should I change the route for children or slower walkers?
Keep longer hotel stays, one principal outing daily and a nearby indoor or rest option. Ask about steps, toilets, stroller or wheelchair access at the chosen venue. A mountain or Wall photograph does not establish accessibility for the whole route.
