The tall Nanzhao-era Qianxun Pagoda and two smaller towers stand below Cangshan, with a reflection pond and a reconstructed Chongsheng Temple complex behind them. Architecture lovers and photographers can spend 2–3 hours here; the uphill temple terraces can be shortened if walking is tiring. Come early on a clear day for the mountain alignment. Visitors seeking dense historical explanation may get more context from Dali Museum.
What it is
The Three Pagodas stand about 1.5 kilometres northwest of Dali Ancient City between Cangshan and Erhai. The 16-storey Qianxun Pagoda rises just under 70 metres and dates to the Nanzhao era, while the two smaller flanking towers were added later.
The pagodas survived earthquakes that destroyed much of the former Chongsheng Temple complex, and a large reconstructed temple area now extends uphill behind them. Separating original towers from modern reconstruction makes the visit more historically useful.
Is it worth your time?
Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple earns its place for first-time Dali visitors, architecture readers and photographers wanting the classic Cangshan alignment. Dali Museum can add denser historical explanation if several reconstructed temple complexes already feature in your itinerary.
Holiday crowds collect around the reflection pond, and a hazy afternoon can remove the Cangshan context that makes the composition distinctive.
